Cooktown Ironwood (Erythropleum Chlorostachys) is harder and heavier than black ebony, making it an excellent choice for both fretless and fretted bass fingerboards. It is also quite economical when compared with ebony.
This timber is an Australian desert hardwood, due to the arid conditions it grows in boards have very little moisture content even when first milled, making a very stable material after normal air-drying.
It has a light brown/tan colour when first cut with a subtle flamed figure, the colour oxidises to more of a redish brown with exposure to light and oxygen.
