New Guinea Rosewood, also known as Narra is a relatively new back and side material. We have used New Guinea Rosewood for over 10 years now and have found it to be an excellent guitar timber. Some of the larger guitar manufacturers are starting to use this timber for guitar back and sides and its popularity is on the rise.
Quality - The New Guinea Rosewood we stock has a very attractive flamed figure. Although New Guinea Rosewood is normally not flamed, material that is flamed is most desirable.
Look - New Guinea Rosewood alternates between golden yellow, light pink and light brown. When flamed, the flames are normally very fine curls and appear 3-dimmensional when viewed from different directions.
Sound - A guitar made from New Guinea Rosewood back and sides will sound lively, clear and responsive. The tone is slightly metallic but also sweet at the same time.
Price - For the attributes of this timber, New Guinea Rosewood is extremely well priced and is sure to rise in the future. Well flamed sets are very reasonably priced.
Availability/Renewability - This timber is obtained from Papua New Guinea, north of Australia. It is relatively plentiful now but it is being used in large quantities for cabinet making so supplies are sure to become low eventually. Most new Guinea Rosewood has no flame, the flamed timber is a rarity.
