European Spruce has been used almost exclusively for top material on stringed instruments for many centuries. It is the perfect accompaniment to European Maple for both archtop and classical guitars.
Quality - We have medium to best quality European Spruce tops available. Brace wood is also available for both archtop and classical guitars.
Look - This timber is white with slight pink to yellow hues. The grain lines are red/ brown with the stiffer pieces having more pronounced grain lines (redlines). Master grade tops have a fine, even and straight grain and are free from defects.
Sound - The sound of these tops is second to none - fundamental and clear but also with a beautiful and brilliant tone. This top material makes a good combination with almost any back and sides material availably.
Price - As with the European Flamed Maple the Mastergrade tops are relatively more expensive when compared to the mid range quality tops. Quality is greatly an aesthetic attribute as some medium quality tops can sound as good as some Master grade tops.
Availability/Renewability - Like European Flamed Maple this timber is gathered in the Carpathian Mountains of Europe. High quality guitar size pieces are becoming more rare every year as the large trees are logged out, this is reflected in the pricing.
