Flamed European Maple/German Maple has been used in the construction of European stringed instruments for hundreds of years. This timber is the first choice for the back and sides of archtop instruments and is a traditional timber for the back and sides of classical guitars.
Quality - We have a range of Flamed European Maple from medium to the highest mastergrade quality. We have back and sides available for both classical and archtop guitars. Our Master grade is the finest flamed timber available, sets of this quality are generally not available from luthiers suppliers.
Look - This timber is very light in colour, almost a light yellow to off-white. The flames make this timber stiff across the grain and are very beautiful giving an almost 3-dimensional look that changes as the surface is viewed from different angles.
Sound - European Flamed Maple has a very fundamental, musical clarity. Due to its inherent lateral stiffness this timber can be thinned out slightly more than rosewood to give a very clear, bright and loud instrument. European Flamed Maple is considered by many luthiers as the finest timber for archtop guitars backs and sides available.
Price - We obtain this timber from the source and can therefore offer competitive prices on all grades. The AAA and Master grades are relatively high in price due to its rarity.
Availability/Renewability - This timber grows in the Carpathian Mountains in Europe. Due to constant demand, high quality guitar size pieces are becoming more rare every year as the large trees are logged out, this is reflected in the pricing.
